Writing Goals
In this section, I will ask you some questions about why you’re choosing to take English 200W and how you hope that it can help you to progress in your writing and learning.
I know W classes are required for everyone. But there are a lot of W classes. Are there other reasons that you actually wanted to take English 200W specifically?
What kind of writing have you mostly done in the past, either for school or for fun?
Not that school isn’t **fun,** but you know what I mean!
How would you describe your previous experiences in writing classes?
Be honest: it won’t hurt my feelings. I didn’t really like writing for school when I started school, and now I’m a writing teacher, so you know, things change.
How will writing be part of your life in the future? If you don't know, that's OK, but how do you imagine that it might factor into your studies, your career or your life outside of your job?
What's something that you know is already really strong about your writing? This could be stuff about the writing itself, or stuff about your process (i.e. I have a pretty regular writing practice, for example)
What's something you'd like to work on in your writing? This could be stuff about the writing itself, or stuff about your process (i.e. I procrastinate and the binge write, for example)
The Class
In this section, I will ask you for some ideas about how we should set things up. We’ll discuss these on the first day.
My plan is to make half of this class asynchronous (i.e. we meet for 1.5 hours each week on Zoom, and the other 1.5 hours is for completing assignments on your own time). Deadlines for the independent portion (so, drafts and weekly work) would be Mondays at 11:59pm, but you can (obviously) turn anything in before that. Do you have any concerns about this?
Do you have a favorite essay that you think we should read together? Why do you like it?
As everyone is coming into the class, I like to start by playing a song that someone suggests. Do you have any song suggestions (YouTube links appreciated) that I should play? Let's limit this to songs with lyrics that we wouldn't mind our parents / grandparents / younger siblings hearing since they might be in the room.
I do not have a mandatory camera policy, but last semester, I got feedback from some students that it would be helpful for me to suggest that everyone turn their cameras on. Do you have thoughts about this?
What was something that a professor did last semester in a distance learning class that really worked well for you as a student?
What's something that professors should really stop doing during this distance learning moment?
Anything else that you would like for me to know? This is a good place to let me know if you have any learning accommodations or circumstances that you'd like for me to keep in mind.
